Usage of private Computers at ETH

Using private computers in ISG D-HEST networks

According to the ETH regulation "Standards für Verantwortlichkeiten und Systempflege" the ISG D-HEST is responsible for the security of the computers in the supported networks. The ISG D-HEST cannot take responsibility for badly maintained or virus infested private computers. As a consequence, it is forbidden to connect private computers to ISG subnets! The institutes are required to provide staff and students with appropriate IT equipment, which will be maintained by the IKs and the ISG.

Exception: If a private computer can be installed with the default operating system of the ISG D-HEST, the computer can then be included in the computer network and the domain. Such an installation completely deletes the hard disk, and the operating system as well as software (licenced through the institute) will be freshly installed.

A computer installed by this routine is liable to the security measurements of ISG, and the user loses his administrative rights on the computer (i.e. the user will not be able to install/uninstall software. Because of licensing reasons, this exception is valid only for ETH-staff, not for students. Furthermore, it is only applicable to computers that are mainly used at the ETH for work purposes.

Public Docking network

In ETH buildings with "Universeller Gebäude-Verkabelung" (UGV), it is possible to patch network sockets (wall outlets) to the Laptop Docking network of KOM-ID. This network is protected by a Firewall and other safety measurements. The user has to authenticate before each connection, and has to accept the IT rules of ETH Zurich. Infringement may result in disabled user accounts.

It is also possible to connect to the ETH network via a wireless connection.

The authentication may be performed either by
1) entering the user credentials on the landing page that appears when browsing outside the ETH or by
2) using a vpn client. Please read the according instructions

More information on the use of private devices and a flyer are available at the ISG. Please contact us.
