Windows-specific Infos

The instructions on how to access a shared mailbox can be found here

The domain password allows you to access the Windows PC in the Domain "D". The same password is valid to log in to the ETH's Exchange Server. You can set the password on the web site passwort.ethz.ch

Changes in the Windows system are being saved in your windows profile. This profile is located on our servers and is being backed up automatically. In contrast to earlier Windows versions, only a small portion of the profile is being roamed (i.e. syncronised from/to server while loggin on and/or off).

Rather, the systems uses the profile directly from the server, given that the system is connected to the network. The profile data is configured as Offline Folders, which provides a local copy if the network connection is not available. As soon as the connection is available again, the profile will be syncronised with the server again.
The following items are not part of this profile management:

  • The folder "My Documents" on your drive T:
  • The folders My Music, My Pictures, My Videos. These folders are saved locally on the according computers.

To lock your PC, press „Windows key“-L. Alternatively, press Ctrl-Alt-Del and select then "Lock this computer".

The disk drives with a network icon in Windows Explorer are merely links to a file server. Please read the information about how to map (additional) network drives (also from home).

Similar to the network drives, you can connect to network printers. Just follow the instructions for Printing.

The distribution of software in the D-HEST is done using AppV. Please read the information about AppV.
The operating system (i.e. Windows) and Microsoft office are not distributed via AppV, but installed locally. Patches and updates are distributed by the WSUS update service provided by the ETH.

The folders Music, Pivtures and Videos are only available on the local computer. This means when you cange your workstation, the date will not be available there. This Data is NOT backed up!

If required, your IK can give you local disk space on your computer (mainly in case of Laptops). Please note, that we basically advise against this, because

  1. the data is not backed up automatically
  2. the data is less secured, i.e. accessible for all users that can access your computer.

If you logon to a domain computer, you have limited rights regarding access to the local hard disk. As a consequence, you are not allowed to install software. If a software has to be installed locally, contact your IK.

On every standard Windows PC, an Antivirus software is installed (AntiVir from Avira or Sophos). The software is started automatically, is running in the background, and makes sure that no virus will get on your PC.

The instruction to use the Terminal-Server can be found here.

Data saved on our servers can be accessed also from outside the ETH (e.g. from home). This can be achieved by several means:

  • By using a VPN connection, you can mount the network drives just like you were at your computer at the ETH. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and allows you to connect your private PC so that it "resides" within the ETH network. Therefore, you will then have the required rights to access ETH resources like the library. Instructions for installation and use of the VPN system can be found VPN
  • By logon to the Terminal Server (see above).
  • By using sftp oder scp (=secure ftp, secure copy) via green-portal.ethz.ch. For Windows, we recommend the Open Source software WinSCP, which you can download from external pagehttp://winscp.net. Note: Department notebooks can get this software via softgrid! WinSCP enables you to copy data back and forth between your PC and the server.
