LTS

Long Term Storage (LTS), data archiving

LTS is the archiving solution for data at ETH.

There is a solution via the SMB protocol (primarily for Windows) and another one via the NFS protocol (primarily for Linux).

Only the SMB variant is described here.

Data preparation

Data must be packed, allowed and recommended are gz, tar, zip, zip7. The LTS-share must not be used for packing, already packed data must be copied.

Metadata should also be created for the archives, which are assigned to the respective archive. The archives can no longer be searched once they have been moved to tape, so the text files with metadata serve as a search source for retrieving data.

The data is set to readonly after a short time and can then no longer be changed.

It is recommended to check (retrieve and verify) data after archiving.

Prerequisite / Organisation

A small group of users is given the rights to write data to LTS and are responsible for the processes accordingly.

The structures and the group must be created in advance by the ISG.
